The 2019 ECB Forum on Central Banking focuses on “20 years of European Economic and Monetary Union”. PhD students are invited to submit papers on the future of the EMU. We would appreciate receiving papers addressing one of the below topics: economic growth within EMU in the context of globalisation and digitalisation; the impact of demographic changes and migration on economic growth within EMU; macroeconomic convergence within EMU.

Papers on other topics relevant for central banking (including sustainable finance, financial stability, banking regulation and supervision, and how climate change could impact central bank decision-making) will also be considered.

Based on the submitted papers, 10-12 PhD students will be chosen by the ECB’s Directorate General Research to attend the Forum. The selected candidates will have the chance to display the main findings of their research in the form of a poster and engage with policymakers and top academics from around the world.

The posters will be assessed by a committee of senior ECB staff and top academics, taking into account votes received from Forum participants. The winner will be announced by the President of the ECB during the conference and will be awarded a prize of €10,000.

Who can participate?

Students of all nationalities, who are currently enrolled in a PhD programme in economics or finance, are invited to participate. Applications from female candidates are particularly welcome.

Students currently working or collaborating with the ECB or a national central bank of the European System of Central Banks are not eligible to participate in the competition.

How will the students be selected?

The ECB will assess the papers against the following two criteria: (i) innovative thinking and scientific merit, and (ii) European policy relevance.
